Well, therein lies the problem. The following
has been proved scientifically by the Dept
of Peat Combustion Studies, Facilty of Rural
Things at the Uni of the H&I (the castle.)
As you all know, the split in the Free Church
was not all about the Professor Foot getting
his cassock felt, but lay deeper in the
depths of the pages of the Gazette. Many
poor old church goers felt upset by the
Gazettes use of the word 'Flock' which,
bearing in mind the great ages and
subsequent deafness of many Free Churchers,
led to many cases of miss-hearing the word,
and beleiving it to be another word of
similar sound, meaning to 'know a person' in
the biblical sense, (as in 'Issac knew
Shonac and she did bear him Murdo
etc).Anyway to cut a made up story short,
the Church demanded that the collective noun
for Sheeep be changed to 'herd' to avoid any
future embarrasment to the Elders &
Ministers. The Dun Ringles were given a
grant by the UHI to popularise the new
terminology through the medium of song.
However the grant was taken back once the
UHI heard the track. (or should that be herd
it? ha ha ha !)
It's true, honest, you just ask Alec Dan and
he'll tell you.
