Coves

We all know the many varied influences behind the AGOFR genre (sheep, peats, underage drinking etc etc etc) but what's everyone listening to nowadays for musical edification & inspiration? Anyone in to Cardiacs? Horslips? Tull? Gentle Giant? First four Runrig albums? Costello (the one from Point)?
Can anyone recommend any thing worth checking out, mahn?

Yes, Horslips are doing the business for the Oatcacks right now, as is Elvish Costello.  Ossian (not Stormwatch) are pretty cool too, or Battlefield Band c.1976-1982 (there's a really good compilation on Temple Records but I can't remember what it's called).  And the latest Waterboys stuff (the one that came out last year is fabby, and the Fish Blues sessions are excellent too), even though they sing about pixies and sh*t and mad Mike wears a bonnet that isn't a Rubettes hat

Ahhh, the Battlefield Band, not to be confused with the Plasterfield Band. I don't think I've heard much of their stuff but I can claim to have been a roadie for them once many years ago (1982) They were playing in Stornoway and then going across to ullapool for another gig. A crowd of us drunk venture scouts were going over to ullapool too, to do an interview for Radio Na Gael about youth theatere in the Highlands and as someone knew someone who knew someone working at the radio station who knew the Battlefield band, we were asked to help cart their gear from ferry to pub. We managed to drop lots of flight cases (or should that be ferry cases) but I don't think we sprained any of the fiddles or pipes. Actually this is a very crap story and I wish now I hadn't started recounting it and actually it wasn't me telling it anyway but someone else.
But Horslips are good. Rumours of a reformation gig/tour floating about, which would be nice.
And hey Roddy, we've still got your Dr Rythum drum machine

given the recent posts re the Time Lord of the Ringles take a step back in time ( no, not Kylie ) and ask santa for a copy of ' Death to the Pixies '.

also, if you haven't bought it yet, get ' Pop Trash ' by Duran Duran, where they drop the groove and turn into John Lennon.

has anyone seen my George Formby 78 rpm collection ?
turned out nice again.

I only ever listen to the Guireans.

If you listen to somebody else's song then it might end up being recognisable when you do a Guireans cover of it.

If you must listen to other things, though, you might want to take a few pointers from Ken "Motorhead" Livingstone.

Ken - once the heaviest dude on North Street (well, at number 24, anyway) - recently requested Hi-NRG disco dance compilation "Total Euphoria" for his Xmas.

This is because accountant Ken has recently devised a numeric system for measuring the Heaviness of music, and all his new CD acquisitions are based on the Metality score which his Ded Def Hard n Heavy J** Ell**t Fightin Mutha ****in Death Woaarghh Index yields.

On this basis, he recommends Steps, S-Club 7 and Daniel O'Donnell's latest offerings, each of them having scored a Plutonium 5/5.

However, he has admitted that the system requires some recalibration after Hear'say's debut single scored a monsta 8 out of 5, well off the end of the Periodic Table. If this were correct it would imply that Hear'say could batter a combined
J** Ell**t and St*v**s team in a fight at the bus stop in Parkend, which
would seem unlikely.

If the various coves and blone are looking for summat new(-ish) to listen to you could do worse than check out the Hives albums Veni Vidi Vicious and Barely Legal.  If anyone wants a CD-R of said albums drop me a line at duncan.kerr@blueyonder.co.uk

Hey Cove,

I only asked for a 'Euphoria' Dance CD from Deadstone for Xmas 'cos I was too embarrased to ask for it in the shop myself.  Honest !
