Hoaidh

With refernece to the only live performance by the Guireans, correct me if I'm wrong, but did the Guireans not play at the Winter Feis in the Scout Hall in 1982/83? I'm certain that some of the band were there, but I can't remember if they played or not. I've found an old tape which has Jazz Mucus on it but this might be Cyclefoot playing it (as didn't they do a cover of STV's 22 Flights of Stairs entitled 22 Pints of Beer) (or was that at MOR83?)
Hope the many AGOFR historians out there can help.

Hmmmm, sounds like The Guireans may well have played at the Winter Feis 1982.
Jazz Mucus would have been the latest release and was never covered by anyone else ( thank Murdo Alec ).
the Cyclefoot set list for MOR '83 was as follows -

Big Murdo and the Good Time Boys
At the Trading Post
Great Tape Records Swindle
Angus McCormack's Dead
22 Pints of Beer
Fraser!
Silly Faces
Screwing and Wire Pulling

Chastity in Motion opened of course with Wordy Rabbinghood and, as well as the Guireans set archived on this site, Swedish TV played an excellent set.

When i get the time i'll post the Swedish TV set list ( i'll have to have a listen first and ask Wattie what the Jethro Tull song is, oops, of course the set wasn't recorded, honest, i'll check my fotographic memory instead )

ps Wattie send me your address details again and i'll post a copy of the MOR 83 and 1985 Live at the Royal Meantime/Swedish TV/Memphis Louie tapes.

If there really was more than one Guireans live appearance in the 20th century then I'll have to put the Tapeography right.

In fact I'll put something in there anyway.

The 1983 tape has the whole gig and there's no "Jazz Mucus" on it. If the Winter Feis predated "Olacs Vol 79" (Jan/Feb 83, I think) then the stuff off the 8-minute "Jazz Mucus" would have been all we could do. Maybe if I hear it I'll get flashbacks.

Re Jeffrey Till song covered by STV, if my memory is correct I do beleive it was called 'Wondering Aloud' or as a German TV station once called it 'Wandering Allowed' I seem to remember it being a good version of it. If only STV hadn't forbidden the recording of their set.Such a pity.If only someone had had a tape recorder stashed away under their bobban chumper with a Woolies C90 tape, we'd have quite an historical record of things!

ah, the mists are clearing.

Swedish TV at the Midges of Rock 1983 -

i'm no sure what song they played first but I'm sure John sung it.
the second song was a country 'n' western version of thon one from Lump of Rock which starts ' they say that there's a thin red line of trenches by the river Rhine ' - yeeha ! Rod warbling on that one.
22 Flights of Stairs followed with John on vocals of course.
then a very good version of Golden Brown with Rod doing the Hugh Cornwall bit.
Wattie is right that the next one was Wondering Aloud with John again on vocals.
Having a Jolly Good Time i think was the title of the next one with Rod doing the reggae tinged vocals.
the excellent In High Places followed, again with Rod taking the lead vocals.
last was Video Baby, Rod again swinging the mike.

time for a Swedish TV site i think, back to the Guireans, haw !

Guireans confirmed as appearing at Winter Feis 1982!!!!

I spent a fun filled 50 minutes last night listening to the recording of the Winter Feis. Haven't laughed so much since reading the Guireans book. I can indeed confirm the appearance of the Guireans at the gig (but as to who was in the line up????????)

Cycelfoot opened with an excellent set including Big Maggy, Child In Time and 22 Pints of Beer (instrumental version). They were followed by Zing Pop and then The Guireans. Unfortunaltly, only around five minutes of the Guireans performance made it to tape. These five minutes include what must be various warming up exercises, featuring snatches of Jazz Mucus, 22 Flights.... and a Bowie riff (Jean Genie??) Or maybe its a T rex one. Anyway, the band eventually get into a tune, which I dont recognise, but the tape comes to an end after about a minute or so of the song. There's electric guitar, bass , Zing Pops Casio VL-Tone and drums. You can hear CJ shouting 'We want the Guireans. Now!!'

Listening to the tape brought back huge amounts of long forgotten memories. I didn't actually perform that day, as I was sick, but I sneaked out and made an enterance after Zing Pops third song. I thought they'd nearly finished, so rather stupidly elected to sit in the audience for the duration of their rather lengthy set. You can hear me walking in on the tape, shortly followed by either Iain or Ken Deadollac!!

Highlights of the gig include CJ's hysterical laughter during Child In Time and the old Scout Hall piano, which was soooooo out of tune, but featured on nearly every song.

Copies of this rare historical event are been copied even as I type. (or at least they will be when I get home tonight)

Do you remember the date of the Winter Feis? I've got no memory of playing it
at all. This  has led to all sorts of speculation and half-backed theories which are now documented in an amended

On a similar histerical note I found a ticket for the Midges of Rock '83 at home in Sandwick (Number 11) along with a copy of the accompanying Zing-Pop book. These things keep turning up everywhere.

CJ - in a typically McLarinesque piece of hype-merchandising - must have made hundreds of copies and carefully given them all low numbers to fuel an inflated collector's market in later years.

The date? Come on, it was a long time ago! It must have been during the month of December (as all the historical records say it was 1982 and not 83) possibly between Xmas and New Year. I think it was on a Saturday during the day as well. (you can hear someone on the tape telling Zing Pop to hurry up and finish their set as someone has to go to work!!)

Hmmmmm maybe it was the Australian Guireans then?

Listen to the tape and see if it jogs the memory banks (in the post)

i have chust listened to Watties fabulous Winter Feis '82 tape ( much appreciated ) and survived. by gawd Cyclefoot were the very best ever. the very best what i don't know though
.
an mp3 of My Name Is Rigor on the site would be much appreciated especially as it sounds like a proto-Guireans song with Bod being mad in the background.

it does sound as if the Guireans clip is a botched attempt at Toilet on the Sea from Midges '83 on first listenening though.

well heng better get back to copying Norwegian Radio tapes for Wattie.
