Haoidh coves

With the sad demise of John Peel and the fast approaching Xmas AGOFR tribute to dead rock stars sessions, would it be appropriate to do a Peel (Church)Session. Especially as John Peel was of course a member of the famous Stornoway lorries, diggers, fish, chipshop owning Peels.
Teenage peats are hard to beat indeed.

Newvalley Musical Express - 22 Dec 2004 : Our Linshader correspondent reports that a horde of AGOFR starts past and present, including members of The Dun Ringles, The Guireans, Zing Pop, Sheep Purple, Cyclefoot, and Ethnic Tractor Clan were spotted last night sneaking into Grimersta studios.

This, combined with the imminent return to Lewis of evil industry moguls CJ Mitchell (29) and Ken Livingstone, has led to press speculation that the predicted Big AGOFR Peel Tribute Cash-in is underway.

The noises emanating last night from the remote luxury studio complex were said by our correspondent to sound not very like songs by Peel favourites the Fall, The Smiths,  The Undertones, The White Stripes and Joy Division.

Rumours that Prof tribute band Norwegian Crossdresser are working on additional
tracks for the Peels sessions, in a different location and in a completely unco-ordinated manner, were not denied by Roddy Huggan yesterday.

Meanwhile, in a press conference outside Tommy Nicolsons, TV's Rod Morison
revealed that he might contribute a track as well if he could be a***ed.

Peels Sessions Iced in AGOFR Chart Manipulation Shock?

Parkend Observer 17 March 2005 - The long-awaited "Peels Sessions" tribute EP, recorded last December by a host of AGOFR stars in honour of the late Radio 1 DJ, JCB hire specialist and chip shop proprietor, is rumoured to be on hold.

Sources in the AGOFR industry report that the master tapes of the sessions have been stashed away in an old plastic sgadan sailte bucket from Cailean Neillie's and buried in a peat bank near the remote Grimersta studios of Dun Ringles production mastermind Jason "Mutt" Laing.

Tape Records supremo CJ "DeMarco" Mitchell (82) is alleged to be behind the move. The reclusive Matheson Road crime lord and arts impresario would not be drawn yesterday on suggestions that he had acted to ensure that the EP would not detract attention from the forthcoming Dun Ringles LP release "Re-plastered and Re-dun".

The fact that R*ddy H*ggan  (aka a yet to be titled Swedish TV tribute band) still hadn't been a***d to record his contribution may also be a factor in the delay in releasing the EP, which also features The Guireans, The Dun Ringles, Cyclefoot, Zing-Pop and many others. But not Isl*nd Expr*ss.

Peels Sessions EP De-Iced...?
Newvalley Musical Express 6/11/2005 - The Word at the Fank is that  release of the long-awaited AGOFR Tribute EP in honour of "The Peel" is imminent.

On a fleekeen horrible night in December 2004, stars of Avante Gaelic "music" such as The Guireans, The Dun Ringles, Norwegian Crossdresser and Zing Pop queued up at Grimersta Studios to pay tribute to the deceased radio cove, despite the fact that he never ever played any of their stuff.

AGOFR versions of tracks by Peel favourites such as The Undertones, The Fall and Joy Division were recorded, and the EP was set for release in early 2005.

Inevitably, due to protracted contractual wrangling between the CEOs of  AGOFR's 2 major international record labels, and the fact that nobody could be a**ed copying it off the cassette on which it was recorded, the project has been on hold ever since.

In the past weeks, however, circumstances have become more favourable to release. What with Rapal's "Peel Day" programme, the publication of Peel's autobiography (which hopefully explains why he didn't play "Pronounced Goo-thans" when Coinneach sent him a copy in 1979) and the imminent release of the Dun Ringles' "Re-Dun",  now would seem to be the time to go to market.

Notoriously litigious AGOFR record industry moguls Ken "Coinneach" Livingstone and CJ "CJ" Mitchell (74) are said to have scented money, buried the tairsgeir and struck a deal. So them units should be shifting any time now...

All of which leads us nicely to this years conumdrum..... namely which dead rock stars are we going to pay tribute too this year, given that no one really famous has snuffed it.

My suggestion would be a special tribute to Tommy Vance, a sort of Friday Rock Show tribute to the great man featuring all them dodgy New Wave Of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) bands from the early 80's.

Trouble is, can anyone remember any of the bands.

Praying Mantis (Praying Midge?)
Iron Maiden (?)
Def Lepard (Deaf Shepard? Yes I know thats already been done...)
Saxon (?)
Samson (?)
Witchfynde (Tolsta-Witchfynde?)
Venom (?)

And what about the songs?

747 (Strangers In The Night) by Saxon. (Norman Britten Islander?)

Any more ideas?

Thoughts on Tommy Vance tribute...

(Septic) Tank

Iron Midden (I know, that's been done too): Bac Child, The Number of Beasts, Bring your Daughter to the Slaughterhouse

Judas Priest (J*s£s Chr#st?) feat. J~hn Sc*b#* on vocals (he'd like the Leatherman look): Breakin' the Law, (or from the latest album) Loch Airigh na Lic

And by the way, I have changed my email address... And how can you possibly claim that's me with J*de J*gg#r? Thon cove's far too fat!

excellent to see the agofr coves keeping up the tradition on the peel tribute cd of naming one of the bands after someone who had no involvement at all in the making of the cd ( roddy huggans swedish tv )

i'm curious to know who is the fine singer on the stv track as my client would like to ' thank ' him personally.

regards
rod macrae's lawyer

Neffer mind thon George Best - Gee-tar legend Link Wray - a huge big influence on MLATRFOD as well as lesser artistes such as The Who, Neil Young, Springsteen et al - has just gone and expired! He must have known we were short of deceased rock stars this year and selflessly sacrificed himself for AGOFR.

Sadly Link's repertoire was almost exclusively instrumental, so we might struggle a bit to adapt his lyrics. Maybe a version of "Rumble" on the chanter?

It's chust occurred to me that it would be pointless for me to contribute to a Tommy Vance tribute given that I'm already doing exactly that effery weekend now, in the hard-drivin' heavy rock combo that is Kroftwerk. We play AC/DC an' Purple choons, you kno...
