Girlie Screemer [play]
Band: Memphis Louie & The Rockin' Firebird Of Death
Genre: Alternative Rock (Swamp Rock)

mr. white
lovely lo-fi sound.
spacey and sassy, with dirty guitar gain.
it's got the quality of the white stripes with a sort of Raveonettes vibe.

the turnaround sounds exactly like the white stripes.
- aidanknight from Victoria, British Columbia, Canada on 15Apr2004

weird
on the weirdness scale this is an 8.7. it inhabits it's own worldspace and therefore any critique is meaningless. a three dimensional being might scoff at the silly two-dimensional flat people but down in two-dimensional flat-people-land this one is a huge hit.
- iskeptici from Santa Rosa, California on 27Mar2004

remix
decent rock tune, tho the only alt thing about it is the 'lo-fi' aesthetic, which is just poor production in my opinion. for one, the guitar is too loud in relation to the other instruments. it's a great gritty guitar sound, but i'm not getting much of anything else. the bass line is simple but that's totally appropriate for this tune and it sounds good. the drum sounds are pretty weak, but good drum sounds are the hardest to get. i can tell that the vocalist can sing.. i don't know why the vocals were given that treatment - it sounds horrible and disconnected from the rest of the instruments. the kind of tune this is, it should be visceral, bristling with energy. the guitar has it, and the bass is cool as is. work on eq'ing the drums and highlighting the strong frequencies in the vocalist's voice instead of trying for the bullhorn sound, which is tired anyway.
- Tabolt from Buffalo, New York on 16Mar2004

Rocket Rockabilly flavor
that was odd and not so pleasant, whatever that intro was. A flavor of low-quality Rocket rockabilly. The affect on the voice isn't good for this song, to me. It's a pretty good beat and mood. It's very rock oriented. I have no idea who you sound like...maybe because I tend to shy away from music like this...not my thing. But, I can appreciate any song with good musicianship...you guys aren't bad.
- Harper from Atlanta, Georgia on 16Mar2004

not bad
Horrible production, and vocals. It hurts my head to listen to this. The guitar sounds cool though, and the drums are pretty standard but they fit the guitar like a glove. This song sorta makes me feel like I'd be driving down the california coast in a convertable. Not bad.
- secondday from White Bear Lake, Minnesota on 15Mar2004

good mood
it puts me in a good mood, good mellow soft beat and melody
nice solo, and vocals, bass is cool
- psychotisim from Shingle Springs, California on 12Mar2004

AjaxTheDog says:
This is extremely raw. The vox are up a bit much in the mix. I would like to hear more drums. As far as mood goes, this one really makes me wanna rock out. Very raw, but, of course, there's a place for that in this world. It would be interesting to hear a better mix of this. Lots of energy. Not sure who you sound like.
- ajaxthedog from Madison, Wisconsin on 12Mar2004

different
This song has a lo-fi sound to it, but it's almost a little too lo-fi as it makes the lyrics indecipherable and prevented me from being able to grasp exactly what your intended mood was. The song reminds me a bit of Butthole Surfers.
- TheId from Churchville, Pennsylvania on 12Mar2004

Good Live Mix
Nice live sound and the over generous reverb and/or effect on vocal makes it stand out well.
Pretty good guitar holds up and drums are also well sync'd. Nice live feeling/mood.
I am not sure who you sound like.
Song feels a tiny bit too short possibly. Maybe something to grab it by the neck at the end (solo or therelike) might make me say I really like it.
Otherwise, the main bulk of a good song is heard first time round and it had a decent impression on me.
I've only listened once so I can't be sure. Sounded quite good all-round (maybe solo/double guitar tracking would make it that extra strech better).
- Richard1110 from Dublin, Lein, Ireland on 12Mar2004

what the hell was that
sounded like satan made a guest appearence in the intro. Was that a fart at the end of the chorus. this was very b-52's meets motley crue.
- gungadihn from Dallas, Texas on 11Mar2004

Not bad
Cool guitar riff in the intro. Recording is pretty thin. Can't hear the bass drum very well. Good vocal ideas. Nice performances. Really cool bass in the end.
- thid1 from Los Angeles, California on 10Mar2004

What a recording!?
Experimental hardcore sound, with an odd sonority to the vocals, while the guitar and bass lines seem too much distorted, what a recording! Was it your choice to record it like that, or lack of resources?
- PabloCastro from Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil on 10Mar2004

The Strokes revisited
Exuberant shouting in the intro then a sort of Elvis sound in the vocals from far away start this track off. The vocals remain hidden under a pile of effects. This sounds like The Strokes. Then there is a talking bit. I think I prefer a more straightforward approach to executing music--vocals should be vocals not a synthesized version of vocals. The guitar work is pretty standard and doesn't add much variety to the sound (monotone).
- PhadeBand from Carmiel, Israel on 9Mar2004

turn off the meggaphone
three piece music Has to be much more full. now I'm not saying that this is not a sellable product in this day and age butt i wouldn't buy it. sorry keep trying
- spooner from Ira, Michigan on 27Feb2004

In your face rock!
This could have been on the Rocky Horror soundtrack extended version. I have a hard time actually understanding the highly effected vocals, but the mood was tons of fun. The melody was simple, with a couple nice chord changes, and the rhythm had a jam quality I appreciated, complete with some neato breaks. The mix was a bit hot, maybe, at any rate it makes for a fun song but definitely alternative.
- Steban from Montgomery, Texas on 22Feb2004

Sexy Megaphone
This is interesting and imaginative. Not the best sound quality, but definitely making use of what is available ( or, so it seems...) The mood is raw and charged with sex and attitude. I am reminded vaguely of Bauhaus-type sound. The megaphone vocal effect could use some changing up, maybe clean it up in certain sections of the tune.
- diemaudlintiara from Ft Lauderdale, Florida on 22Feb2004

Singing through a megaphone in the sixties
This song made me want to jump on my table and shake my ass like never before!

The sound was pretty rocking. Nice crunchy sounding guitars.

Who do you sound like? Well lets see maybe a through back to a lost time where it was ok to have fun in rock n roll or to answer a little less vague, white stripes sounding.

I am really not sure who you sound like but I know what time period you came from.
- MattyZ3 from Northern, New Jersey on 22Feb2004

nice and straight forward
I like the straight-forwardness of this song. Really no-frills. The vocal is cool, the whole thing sounds like it was recorded in 1964. The guitar tone is fat, dirty, and in your face, pretty garagey (if that's even a word, i think it might be these days). It reminds me of a cross between the Misfits and the Standells.
I dig the drugged-out feel of the whole production. I would like to check out more from this group.
- shrimpanzee from Waterford, Michigan on 21Feb2004

Lo-Fi Groove
First Impression: Blech.

Good: Groove, originality, energy, instrumental performance.
So-so: Lyrics, arrangement, mood, vocal style and performance, lyrics.
Not so: Production.

The scream at the beginning is a turn-off. It took me a while to get back into the song after it.
The production is not a good thing to me either. Its hard to hear and understand the vocals, and some effects are too sharp/harsh/out front.

All that said, I like this song. The groove is sweet and the song doesn't get old. It also ended unexpectedly, which I really enjoyed.

In my opinion, the style is White Stripes, Strokes, and Bruce Springsteen. The production makes it sound more like Nirvana or Stone Temple Pilots.
- June_Ruin from Lansing, Michigan on 21Feb2004

Rocky Horrible
OK...let's make the most annoying recording we can make and see how many people we can irritate. Mission accomplished.
- Dobbo from New York on 7Feb2004

cramps-like
this song reminded me of the band, the cramps. personally, not my cup of tea, but i'm sure there's an audience for this out there and probably would be better live than recorded.
- hairpuller from Santa Rosa, California on 8Feb2004

review 1
A fairly aggressive sounding song. Although I don't think it is the most energetic song it's
guitar and bass lines are very catchy. The reverb in the vocals sounds really good. It reminds me of a combination of old sonic youth and new pearl jam.
- Johnny_Lime from Burlington, Ontario, Canada on 7Feb2004

holy lo-fi!
has that raw, old-school 70's vinyl feel. not terrible. was that a random horn fart i heard before the 2nd verse? neat. definetly listenable.
- getupcurt from Kutztown, Pennsylvania on 6Feb2004

Oddball
This is very much an on-crack song, but I mean that in a good way. Reminds me of early Ween. The production is horrible, but in a way that gives it character (although it could definitely use more crums/bass and less guitar). I love the tinny vocals. This is the kind of song that goes down great when you've drunk so much coffee you're one cup away from barfing. Very cool.
- oskarmatzerath from Jackson Heights, New York on 10Feb2004

Um
OK... well, the vocals are really odd. Drumming is nothing special, neither is the guitar playing. The chord progression is not very original. The song does not put me into any type of mood, or... any good one. Not bad, but not as good as fine musicians such as yourself could do.
- dannerogers from Bellevue, Washington on 8Feb2004

A demon surf guitar
love the vocal treatment, it is a bit Iggy and Stooges Lite however, lots of great ideas, the part where one thing is ascending while the other takes an opposite route is a nice touch, hope that helps
- saintbob from Glasgow, Argyll, United Kingdom on 8Feb2004

nice rockin intro
The vocals are a little loud. The sound quality of them is poor. Maybe a better effect would have sounded a little better produced. There are some intersting parts to this song. it rocks...thats for sure. I think it neeeds the touch of a pro producer. Good start tho.
- smokescreenband from Scottsdale, Arizona on 10Feb2004

your own
good guitar sound from the get-go. i'm not sure who you guys sound like..but i wish the vocals were different... but i'd have to hear other stuff......it may be part of your sound.
- silverface from Nashville, Tennessee on 11Feb2004

The beging is like Peter Townsend on steriods..
Great mix on the vocal! I like that sound! I loved the traveling bass line. This is a good song to play when you are being chased by the cops and your making a clea getaway..Good Job!
- stringman3 from Parker, Colorado on 24Dec2003

GIVE ME A BREAK GB
wow...no tone on the guiar here. vocals are a joke right? the melody seems to be ok. The voice isn't very good, but the melody is ok. The drums are at least pretty solid. A better recording would be nice. The bass seems to have it together too.
- DueWednesday from Little Rock, Arkansas on 13Dec2003

Visceral!!!
Man...what a hook! Makes you wanna really bealive in rock n'roll again...Incredible beat....sounds in a way like a 21th century Joy division...but don't worry..it's a very original song!Incredible actually. Congratulations. Great rock band...great vocals....
- MEIRELLES from Rio De Janeiro, Brazil on 12Dec2003

noisy intro
kung-fu kihap vocal intro very cool....going downhill....fast.....getting annoying.......can't take much more....okay, i'm done with this. it SUCKS.
- mike_placement from The Shire, Middle Earth on 14Dec2003

Lowfi Garage similar in some ways to a group ..
I thought when it started it'd go a bit hardcore but I'm glad you didn't so I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. As I mentioned in the headline part of this review your echo on the vocals reminded me a bit of a group called the Cramps. A few people will probably tell you to spend more on the recording and make it more high fidelity but I'm not one of them. I'm very partial to the slightly indie underground trebly style that was going around before the 1980s. Pretty good effort from my standpoint.
- OO@333755~Amateurmuso from Sydney, Nsw, Australia on 13Dec2003

um, vocals...
The vocals were just kind of weird, and the music wasn't really anything special. You have a good beat going, but the music going to that music isn't really that interesting. But yeah, not digging the vocals.
- josh_chester from Mount Horeb, Wisconsin on 22Dec2003

nice
Intro was a little abrasive. Sounds somewhat repetitive. Recording is good. Like guitar riff.
- lkc2727 from Edmond, Oklahoma on 2Dec2003

Ok
The playing could be a lot tighter. Not bad overall, but the vocals could be higher and less effected.
- jcalieri from Boston, Massachusetts on 21Dec2003

Crazy people
This is a really insane sound, especially at the beginning. However, I like it quite a lot, that sort of buzz punk vague thrashy feel. The guitar tones and tinny vocals are all great. This is really original and a worthwhile song.
- karmasutra from Maybe, Wisconsin on 21Dec2003

Up Beat
Vocals are tough to hear. Kind of catchy. Not my cup of tea. A bit of work and it could be a decent song. I look for some more substance.
- HiFi from Columbia, Missouri on 18Dec2003

Loudspeaker effect
The loudspeaker effect is sorta cool, but you can't hear what's being said. Needs a bridge or chorus to break the monotony. The bass breakdown is nice, but the snare really drones on. I'd try adding a chorus that shifts gears for a while and then breaks and returns back to the verses. Could be a fun tune w/ a few minor adjustments.
- identityrocks from Canfield, Ohio on 7Dec2003

really cool sounding song. original.
cool effects. it gives the song a lot of personality. vocals are cool. chord progression is awesome too. ou have the right dynamics. great song writing. keep it up.
- throatband from Unspecified on 18Dec2003

NOT!
get rid of the heavy effects on the vocals, the mix needs attention. cannot really comment as nothing distinguishes itself in this song to me... sorry
- JamminJ from Phoenix, Arizona on 18Dec2003

Infectious Beat
I like the retro sound they're going for, but the vocals could be clearer and more up front in the mix. Although what I could hear was catchy.
- buffalotheory from Gurnee, Illinois on 10Dec2003

feedback no, hiss yes !
Loved the filth at the start of the track and general lofi whatnot. Liked the Iggyness..someone in Japan would probably buy this. Get those vocals
up. Up I say !! Who do you sound like ? Iggy. The sound quality is sh1t, but it's almost a requirement. for the genre. I'd suggest getting a real drummer who takes too many drugs (and have a backup ready) or works for food (skinny like a runt) and getting out there, my son.
- adam_w from Reading, Berkshire, United Kingdom on 17Dec2003

Whatever...
The scream is a little silly at the beginnig, but whatever. Your signing reminds of David Byrne. The bridge sounds like the line was ripped right out of Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground. I really like this song, it's the mood that does it for me; very upbeat and driving, that's how I like my music. The sound of the recording itself is far from great but luckily for you the song is strong enough on it's own to not suffer from it, in fact it kinda makes it feel more authentic and rocking. If you have a cleaner version of this song somewhere, I'd love a copy. Kee[ it up.
- Blorp from Montreal, Quebec, Canada on 16Dec2003

Very retro rock sound!
Very retro rocking sound. Great riff at the beginning with a very interesting vocal sample. Good singer and catchy guitar work. Would be fantastic in a live setting. However, like so many other songs on here the production is too muffled for your style. Try and get in a good studio because you have a great song here and with some money and production behind it you could go places. Keep it up guys and keep on rawkin!
- harmofwill from Melbourne, Victoria, Australia on 16Dec2003

wicked
i totally dig the nasty guitar tone, wicked. the singing has way too much 'verb/delay on it in my opinion. I like the filtered sound. song has terrible recording quality, but goes with the overall vibe.
- OO@264083~everydayinfo from Auburn, New Hampshire on 3Dec2003

you've got some good ideas.
i dont know man. youve got some really good ideas. what youve got going is pretty cool, but the way its put together is a little weird. the vocals seem...not together with the rest of the song. drums are a little too soft, and the guitars, both lead and bass are way too fuzzy. granted, prolly something youre going for, but it doesnt necessarily work. also, the ending is just plain dumb.
- medford from Decatur, Illinois on 15Dec2003

Effect City.
The mix is kind of bad guys...the guitars are too hot, and the effects on the vocals actually make them sound smaller. Work more on your drum sounds, there is virtually no kick drum. Let's see. The mood is kind of just blech..the sound is simply mixed poorly, I think you sound kind of like Bowie or the Rolling Stones if they sucked
- dannyrockett from New York on 14Dec2003

jesus
jesus, please stop this the production is horrible and the growl was pretty cheesy was this recorded on a 4 track? i've heard farts that sound better than this
- micgame from Austin, Texas on 10Dec2003

Heavy and nice - kinda punky without being an..
A very straight ahead piece of music. The chord progression is a little typical, but it works. I have no idea who you sound like, but it has a "sounds like other bands" feel to it. That's a good thing. The bass stands out for me in this recording. Good mix and effort. I like the energy. CW
- Olivegreen from San Francisco, California on 14Dec2003

effects these days
i think a lot of people think that if you slap enough lennon-echo onto the vox then it will turn an iffy performance into an acceptable one. not so. this is a nice ditty for a home recording, but it's a musical inside joke. it might be great for you and your buddies to create, listen to, and critique, but the rest of us (well, me anyway) just aren't in on the joke, so it has no impact. judging by your request for input on oboe, cello and decks, i'm gonna bet that this is a quickie side-project, since i didn't catch any of 'em. hey, as long as you had fun doing it.
- dirk_bunting from Unspecified on 8Dec2003

kinda 60's vocals
kinda 60's vocals, but somehow this sounds like a joke. I can't really explain why, but that's the feeling I get. nice work anyway! keep it up! If you like progressive death, in the same spirit as Opeth, dimmu borgir, cradle of filth, please check my shit out at "Meriah"
- Meriah from Unspecified on 14Dec2003

different
but the vocals I think the vocalist is off key, the type of guitar is a many simple, ( nothing the different on the guitars), the bass makes the sames notes all time, soory but your band need more feeling and to practise more scales
- relics from Fort Myers-Sao Paulo, Florida on 13Dec2003

this is my
kinda music.i really like this song.im gonna have to check out your stuff.i cant think of who you guys sound like tho.
- johnnycrash from Aspen, Colorado on 13Dec2003

Introduction's COOL!
Now this is the most original song I've reviewed today!!! Not much else to say...I never listen to the whole song..this time I did!
- rourke from Montreal, Quebec, Canada on 14Dec2003

GREAT Catchy tune
I was scared my the scream in the beginning but now everything is good. This song is really good. I love the voice effects. I also liek hwo the bass and guitar "sing" together. I did'nt hear a cello or oboe..... hmm. Oh well either way the tuen is catchy and move around enough that it doesn't get boring. Awesome job!
- TasteofChains from Blackstone, Massachusetts on 4Dec2003

Whoohoo!
Neato. This has almost a surfer-music vibe to it that you could do that dance from the '60s where everyone would be pretending to swim on the dance floor. What was that called? Anyyway, I like this song. It's making me bop. It has that old groovy vibe without being unoriginal, too. I'm glad for the people who made this song, because they surely know they rock.
- Flloyd from Boston, Massachusetts on 13Dec2003

Oboe? Cello?
When the song first starts, I can't believe there is actually going to be an oboe or cello in the song. I honestly don't hear those things. I'm a little scared when hearing this song.
- SaraRomano from Ann Arbor, Mi (Oregon, Ohio, Ohio on 7Dec2003

Bzzzzzz
Some bands decide on a sound to fit their style other bands simply cannot afford a high quality recording. In the case of this band i'm going to assume it's the former. So much fuzz in this song I had to check my ears more than once. The mood was somewhere in between rock and roll and 70's new wave. It worked on it's own plain and I was reminded sometimes of the Velvet Underground. A fairly short song but that didn't hurt anything. I didn't walk away from this song with any hooks stuck in my head but I will always remember he fuzz!!! Lo Fi still has it's place in music. This band proves it can be done in style.
- ozflow from Peterborough, Ontario, Canada on 12Dec2003

lay it down
vocals have too much reverb. mood is pretty limp, nothing catching my interest. kinda sound like the strokes or some shit like that. not bad, not really my taste.
- Harvey263 from Somewhere In, California on 11Dec2003

ROOOOCK
great intro...umm...this sounds like the Sonics from the 60s with really weird production...have you heard them...they're good...so are you...except you missed the boat by about 45 years. sorry but dat the truth...but =you guys good
- wethemachines from Tucson, Arizona on 20Feb2004

Original
radio vocals, different sound, good guitars but simple arrangement, production need work, mood is ok, sound is good, good work, just need a better production
- BoomBabies from San Marcos, California on 20Feb2004
