The Subterraneans (lineup 1) support Oasis at the Nicolson Monday 14 February 1983

Lineup:

  • Emil The Shrink ( Vocals, Harmonica)
  • Randy T Pennsylvania (Lead Git-tar)
  • Bob Bitchin’ (Rhythm Git-tar)
  • Leroi Z Coondawg (Bass)
  • Carl Ramone (Drums)

The Nicolson Institute was running a St Valentine's night dance in the Assembly Hall, and had hired Parkend Eagles impersonators (as opposed to Manchester Beatles impersonators) Oasis to play.

Kristina “Fingers” Macleod, ex-piano player in short-lived beatnik combo Desolation Angels, somehow arranged a support slot for the band, playing the mid-evening break.

Unfortunately the band was pretty much defunct by this time. Consequently, Wilbur and Dead had to put something together fast or end up sleeping with the mogs and skeds underneath Number 1 Pier. David Maclennan and Robbie Dawson from the Meantime agreed to stand in on Lead Guitar and Drums respectively, and <ALEX John Kennedy>from <SWEDISH TV>agreed to come in on Rhythm Guitar.

Wilbur chose yet another beat book band name for the night – The Subterraneans.

He also cautioned that things could go wrong and that it would be best to adopt pseudonyms just in case. So were born Emil The Shrink (Vocals/Harmonica), Bob Bitchin’ (Rhythm Git-tar), Randy T Pennsylvania (Lead Git-tar), Leroi Z Coondawg (Bass) and Carl Ramone (Drums).

After one excellent practice at Randy T Pennsylvania's place in Gress, the night itself was a bit of a disaster, with poor sound, no monitors, the house lights turned up full and most of the audience having gone outside for fags, super lager, getting off and probably the customary rammy with Kenny N*rd and Johnny Pr*ne.

This enabled Emil to write a glowing (anonymous) review for the 6th year magazine with which nobody could argue. Just to make sure it stays that way, there are no known recordings of the gig.

Totally impartial review written by somebody not connected with the Subterraneans
