aka Apartment
Bill
Emil The Shrink
and his
dinner at
Hebridean Tyre
Services,
Xmas/New Year
84/85
Played : Atonal
Vocals
and Detuned Harmonica
From : 1981 -
1985
After leaving
the
Subterraneans,
Emil spent a
year or two
hoboin' around
Canada and the
States,
ostensibly on
some kind of
student exchange
thing but in
reality working
hard on his mid
Atlantic accent
and going to see
John Lee Hooker
and Jerry Lee
Lewis.
Eventually Emil
washed up in
Glasgow and went
to work as a
director and
producer for the
BBC Gaelic
department. Over
the years he's
been responsible
for TV shows
ranging
from Brag and
Ran Dan to Eorpa,
Na h-Eiltirich
and more
recently the
acclaimed
adaptation of
Finlay J
Macdonald's "Gruth
's Uachdar".
He's also
developed a
number of deep
and impenetrable
independent
films.
Emil used to jam
on the harmonica
a bit after the
Subterraneans,
but isn't known
to have been
involved in
anything more
permanent.
He was, however,
responsible for
the masterstroke
of commissioning
Leroi Z Coondawg
to write the
theme song for
Ran Dan and
then, keenly
aware of the
musical talents of
his old
bandmates, refusing
to let Leroi and
Alasdair "Bod"
Mackay
record it. He
gave the job to
Glasgow surf
outfit
The Beat Poets
instead.
Emil was
subsequently involved
in directing
Weejie Soap "River
City".
Rumours that he
left the
programme after
the BBC refused
his demands
to film the
Shieldinch
saga in moody
black & white,
with all
dialogue in
Swedish, have not
been denied.
Emil is now
directing gruesome
hospital drama Holby
City, where
the budget
for special
effects is
slighlty more
than it was in
The
Subterraneans
Show.
